Game Rules
Objective
As a mine manager, extract as much coal as possible to win! But beware of looters and unexpected events...
Components
- 1 central board, 6 colored player boards, 6 pawns
- 30 color cards, 60 job cards, 10 event cards
- 20 coal cubes, 1 die, 6 die cards (for the variant)
Setup
- Each player takes 1 colored board, 2 coals, color cards, and 8 starting job cards.
- The central board, pawns, and coal supply are placed in the center.
- The last player to have handled coal starts, with the die on "1".
Turn Sequence
- Each player takes turns placing 1 card on the 5 spaces (events, looters' shelter, watchtower, mine, recruitment).
- Play up to 4 cards per round, with the option to place several cards on the same area.
- Resolution phase: reveal the cards in order; apply effects from 1 to 6 (events, attacks, defenses, sales (move pawns), mining, recruitment).
- Discard the cards, pass the die to the left and add +1 (next round).
Tip: Don't forget to protect your coal: looters never sleep!
End of Game
The game ends after 6 rounds or as soon as a player reaches 21 points. In the event of a tie, decide based on: coal left in stock, then job cards, and finally a die roll if there's still a tie.
Variant
Specificities
- Each player starts with 3 coals (instead of 2).
- No central coal supply on the main board.
- At the start of each round, the player with the die draws a die card: it determines the max amounts to mine and sell for everyone that round.
Strategic advantage: The last player knows everyone's moves before playing but may run out of coal!
Dummy Player
Setup
- Prepare the dummy player's board as for a regular player.
Rounds 1 to 5
- Draw 4 cards for them each round using the method in the rulebook.
- If the dummy player has coal: play a watchtower card.
- If several players have coal: draw a color and a job card for the looters' shelter.
- Put 1 recruitment card.
- If any cards remain to be played, put them in the mine.
Round 6
- 2 watchtower cards if the dummy has coal.
- Remaining cards in the looters' shelter depending on how many opponents have coal.
Note: The dummy player can mine coal without limit. Replace any event cards drawn for them with job cards.

History of Coal
Formation of coal
Coal formed millions of years ago from fossil forests, compressed in swamps, then slowly transformed under pressure and heat.
Types of coal
- Peat: first stage, rich in water, low in carbon.
- Lignite: brown coal, used for electricity.
- Bituminous coal: intermediate, industrial exploitation.
- Anthracite: richest in carbon, hard, black, burns very hot.
History and exploitation in France
- Key role since the 19th century: locomotives, industry, heating.
- Main coalfields: Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Lorraine, Massif Central, Tarn-Aveyron…
- Up to 300,000 people employed in the mines!
Mining heritage
Headframes, spoil tips, mining towns, museums: all this heritage is part of our culture and landscapes.
Coal shaped the industrial and human history of many French regions.
